Meaning

Helping people make sense of their health and their lives

Healing is not only physical. Part of my practice is psychotherapeutic: helping people make sense of, and assign meaning to, their lives and their experiences of health and illness.

Why meaning matters

The subjective and the objective, both honored

My doctoral research looked at how people make sense of, and assign meaning to, the unexpected and unintended consequences of chiropractic treatment, and what that means for clinical practice. It grew into an integral model of health care in which the person's own experience matters as much as what can be measured.

I don't look at health as a thing. It is more of an attitude, a balance of physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. Care starts by listening, without judgment, to a person's concerns and experiences.

The foundations

Four ideas that guide the work

The principles behind how I listen, teach and care for people.

  • Health psychology

How our thoughts, emotions and circumstances shape our health, and how our health shapes them in return. My PhD is in Health Psychology/Health Science from Lancaster University.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

Practical tools for noticing the patterns of thought and behavior that keep us stuck, and for gently changing them.

  • An integral model of health

A model of care in which the subjective view, what an experience means to you, and the objective view, what can be measured, are both honored.

  • General Systems Theory

The understanding that all things are interconnected and interdependent, a question I have carried since a childhood meeting with Dr. Herbert Heineman.

At Harbor Light

Mind and body, in the same building

The same whole-person thinking runs through Harbor Light, from my chiropractic care to marriage and family therapy with Marshall B. Greenstein, LMFT, and my evening classes on stress, gratitude and the brain.
